Why having a good hiking backpack is important

When it comes to hiking/backpacking, the most essential piece of equipment that you can invest in is a backpack. With so many brands available and dozens of factors to consider, choosing the right pack is not an easy task.

A good hiking backpack can give you:

  • peace of mind: having a high-quality, well-fitted backpack can help put your mind at ease -> a more enjoyable hiking experience
  • enough space to carry gears: the pack should have a good balance between capacity and weight; this will depend on the type of expedition you’re intending to use it for.
  • comfort: a good backpack has straps and padding that help to distribute the load evenly, which is especially important for strenuously long hikes.
  • easy access: having multiple compartments and good organizational features allows for quick, easy access and reduces time wasted on the trail.
  • confident: when putting on a good backpack, you will feel confident, motivated, and ready to tackle any challenges.

So without further ado, here are the 15 best hiking backpacks under $ 100.

Reviews – best hiking backpacks under $ 100

After much research and testing, I have narrowed it down to the 15 best hiking backpacks under $ 100. In the following sections, we will dive deeper into each of them and discuss their main features, highlights, and drawbacks.

    1. Gonex Travel Backpack 45

    • Capacity: 45 L
    • Weight: 1.3 lbs
    • Dimension: 15 x 13 x 3 in
    • Price: $19.99 (2021)

The Gonex 45 is currently one of the most popular backpacks for beginners. It is spacious, light, durable, and doesn’t cost a fortune. If you’re looking for a good and versatile hiking backpack, then the Gonex 45 may be a perfect fit for you.

With a capacity of 45 L, it is quite large for a frameless backpack. This backpack definitely combines the best of both worlds. It is large enough to carry gears for a multi-day trip, but at only 1.3 lbs, it is extremely lightweight. You cannot get much better than that.

The Gonex 45 has all the necessary features to make your trip enjoyable. Although it does not have an internal frame, it can still carry a small sleeping bag and tent.

The breathable mesh shoulder straps are designed to relieve stress from your shoulders and ensure good ventilation. The waterproof sleeping bag compartment at the bottom will keep your bag dry & clean.

Once you have packed everything, just pull on the compression straps to secure the load. The backpack itself is made from water-resistant nylon and has no problem standing up to a light drizzle.

Additionally, when not in use, it can be folded into a compact package for storage. Overall, the Gonex 45 is a very basic but convenient backpack, ideal for any outdoor activity including hiking, camping, backpacking, skiing, and cycling.

    Pros

    ✔️ lightweight but durable

✔️ can be folded; very compact and portable

✔️ spacious for a frameless pack

    Cons

    ❌ only top access

❌ the shoulder straps are quite thin

❌ frameless; spacious but cannot carry a heavy load

    2. Amazon Basics Hiking Backpack

    • Capacity: 65 L
    • Weight: 4.1 lbs
    • Dimension:
    • Price: $71.49 (2021)

While Amazon is not a brand that is specialized in outdoor gear, the Amazon 65 is one of the best hiking backpacks under $ 100.

This backpack is supported by a sturdy internal frame. With a capacity of 65 L, it is perfect for backpacking trips that last for several days.

The Amazon 65 has extensive storage compartments for organization purposes. In addition to the main compartment, there are mesh side pockets, loops for use with carabiners, a sleeping bag compartment, and several compression straps to keep your equipment well secured.

This backpack is designed to be comfortable, which also explains why it is on the heavier side. The padded shoulder straps are thick enough to relieve some of the heavy loads from your shoulders.

In addition, the foam lumbar pad located on the back panel acts as a support to your lower back. They help you to maintain a good posture while hiking.

Unlike many cheap hiking packs, the Amazon 65 has several features to combat non-ideal weather. It has a water-repellent polyester coating, an integrated rainfly, as well as a separate rain cover.

If you are looking for a cheap backpack that is sturdy, spacious, and meets all your basic needs, then the Amazon 65 is a great choice.

    Pros

    ✔️ waterproof rain cover included

    ✔️ very sturdy

    ✔️ lots of useful pockets

    Cons

❌ not as spacious as advertised

❌ hip belt is not well padded

❌ shoulder straps tend to slip if the load is heavy

    3. Loowoko Hiking Backpack 50L

    • Capacity: 50 L
    • Weight: 2.6 lbs
    • Dimension: 25.6 x 13.8 x 9.8 in
    • Price: $49.99 (2021)

I came across this brand by total chance (bought it second-hand) and I was pleasantly surprised at how well it performs. I found the sleeping bag compartment to be a bit small but the spacious main section makes up for it.

Although it does not have an internal frame, 50 L is more than enough to carry the required gears for any day hike or weekend trip.

For its price, the Loowoko 50 comes with a nice range of features that allow users to wear it comfortably. The S-shaped shoulder straps are thick and padded with breathable sponges.

Its back panel features molded channels, an open-cell foam, as well as a thick layer of lumbar padding. They promote airflow and provide maximum comfort.

The Loowoko 50’s adjustable straps are what set it apartfrom the other best hiking backpacks under $ 100. Equipped with 8 in total, they will for sure keep everything secured. Tent, mat, tripod, trekking poles, and even sleep bag can be strapped down comfortably to its exterior.

The Loowoko 50 is made from high-quality rip-stop polyester fabric that is both durable and water-resistant. It comes with its own rain cover in case of heavy pouring.

    Pros

    ✔️ rain cover included

    ✔️ lightweight

    ✔️ good ventilation system

    ✔️ 8 adjustable compression straps

    Cons

    ❌ frameless

❌ sleeping bag compartment is quite small

    4. High Sierra Pathway 50L Backpack

    • Capacity: 50 L
    • Weight: 2.9 lbs
    • Dimension: 23 x 12.5 x 9 in
    • Price: $79.99 (2021)

The High Sierra Pathway 50 is the perfect backpack for any outdoor adventure. It is large enough to carry the gears required for a multi-day trip, especially if you’re a minimalist backpacker.

Storage is one reason why this backpack stands out among the rest. Along with an opening at the top, the High Sierra Pathway 50 features a large U-shaped zipper opening at the front, which allows you to access the large compartment directly.

It has a series of divider panels and interior straps to help keep the gears organized. Furthermore, every compartment is line with thick paddings to ensure comfort for the user.

The two shoulder pads help to distribute the weight evenly and prevent the straps, which are adjustable, from slipping. I found the chest strap to be a bit thin so this backpack is not suitable for longer trips. It can handle 25-30 lbs comfortably.

Although there isn’t a compartment for your sleeping bag, the High Sierra 50 does have 2 side pockets for water bottles, a pair of loops for hanging small items, and adjustable attachment points for trekking poles.

Overall, I’m very satisfied with its simple but compact design, the quality of the material, and the wide range of pockets that it has. For beginners who are looking for a well-rounded and spacious, yet affordable backpack, the high Sierra Pathway 50 is a superb choice.

    Pros

✔️ comfortable shoulder straps with thick paddings

    ✔️ compact design

✔️ accurate size, you get 50 L as advertised – which is quite spacious

    Cons

    ❌ no sleeping bag compartment

    • Capacity: 20 L
    • Weight: 1.2 lbs
    • Dimension: 21 x 13 x 3 in
    • Price: $65.79 (2021)

Osprey, being one of the premium backpacking brands, is not featured extensively on this list of inexpensive backpacks. However, their smaller day packs are both high in quality and under the required budget.

The Osprey Daylite Plus is widely popular due to its lightweight, sleek design, simplicity, and comfortability. It was originally designed as an attachment to the larger Osprey multi-day backpacks. But it is also an excellent pack on its own.

With a storage capacity of 20 L, it is the perfect choice for short hikes and side trips.

The Osprey Daylite Plus features a main compartment with a dedicated laptop sleeve, which only speaks for its versatility. As much as it is good for the backcountry, it can also be used for day-to-day activities.

As with any other Osprey product, the Daylite Plus is as stylish and durable as it gets. Although its chest and hip straps do not offer as much support as some of the larger packs, they can still take some load off your shoulders.

The back panel is made out of foam and cover with a thin sheet of breathable mesh, which provides both comfort and ventilation.

The Osprey Daylite Plus is also equipped with dual stretchy side pockets for water bottles, a front panel where you can stuff in rain ponchos and other small items, and a vertical zippered pocket.

As you can see, it is pretty hard to deny that the Osprey Daylite Plus is among the best backpacks under $ 100 for day hiking.

    Pros

    ✔️ multi-purpose interior sleeve

    ✔️ durable and lightweight

    ✔️ comfortable back panel

    ✔️ clean and sleek design

    Cons

❌ more expensive than other packs of the same size

    6. Venture Pal 40L Lightweight Daypack

    • Capacity: 40 L
    • Weight: 0.7 lbs
    • Dimension: 12.5 x 6.3 x 19.3 in
    • Price: $19.49 (2021)

The Venture Pal 40 is the cheapest backpack on the list. However, its quality is not compromised because of that.

At only 0.7 lbs, it is also unusually light for its size. It can be folded into its own pocket, turning it into a compact package. I love to carry this pack with me when backpacking/traveling so I can use it as a day pack.

The Venture Pal 40 has a large main compartment, a smaller front compartment, and two side pockets. The four-directional compression straps on both sides help keep the pack secured and tidy.

In addition to the usual compartments, this backpack is also designed with a zipper “wet pocket”. It is used to store sweaty clothes or wet towel/bathing suits, separating them from the rest of the dry gears.

The Venture Pal 40 is made from durable nylon fabric and heavy-duty metal zippers, which allow it to hold a much heavier load compare to the other day hiking backpacks.

Not only that it is cheap, it is ALSO lightweight and spacious. The Venture Pal 40 is definitely one of the best hiking backpacks under $ 100.

    Pros

✔️ a convenient wet pocket used to separate set gears

    ✔️ ultra-lightweight

✔️foldable into a small package for storage

    Cons

    ❌ frameless

    ❌ no hip support

    7. Patagonia Refugio 28L Pack

    • Capacity: 28 L
    • Weight: 1.5 lbs
    • Dimension: 19 x 12 x 8 in
    • Price: $106.54 (2021)

The Patagonia Refugio 28 made the list of the best hiking backpacks under $ 100 for its durability, versatility, and comfortability.

I like to think of the Patagonia Refugio 28 as a classic school bag designed for both day-to-day activities and outdoor adventures. This multi-purpose backpack will come in handy on any day hike or weekend trip.

The main compartment is equipped with two dedicated sleeves (for a 15″ laptop and a tablet). At 28 L, it is not the most spacious, but it is large enough to carry all the gear and snacks required for a day trip.

The thick (and well-padded) fabric helps to protect the electronics, but it also prevents the items in the back from rubbing uncomfortably onto your back.

The second compartment has organization pockets that are designed to store electronic accessories, your wallet, and other small items (first aid kit, rain poncho, etc.).

The highly breathable mesh on the rear panel provides comfort. The shoulder straps also are padded with the same material. It can easily carry a load of up to 20 lbs, which is more than enough for any day trip.

The Patagonia Refugio 28 is a good quality backpack from a reputable brand. It is roomy, lightweight, has an awesome design, and keeps all my gears organized. It does cost a bit more but you generally get what you pay for!

    Pros

✔️ lots of pockets; great organizational features

    ✔️ high-quality laptop sleeve

✔️ durable materials; stitches and zippers are of high quality

    Cons

❌ thin chest straps; they can dig into your body if the load is heavy

    ❌ higher price

    8. Kelty Redwing 50 Backpack

    • Capacity: 50 L
    • Weight: 3.7 lbs
    • Dimension: 26 x 16 x 12 in
    • Price: $112.24 (2021)

While the Kelty Redwing 50 is more expensive than the other best hiking backpacks under $ 100, it has many innovative and useful features that justify its price.

Having been redesigned several times, the Kelty Redwing 50 has been carefully created to accommodate many different kinds of adventures. It is suitable for everything from international travel to day-hiking, to weekend trips.

This backpack comes with an adjustable suspension that allows it to fit a range of torso lengths.

It is both top and front loading. The U-shaped zipper allows you to open up the main compartment like a duffel bag. This feature comes in very handy when you need to access gears at the bottom.

Its main compartment comes with a hydration pocket, which can also be used to store a 15″ laptop.

The pair of mesh pockets on the sides are typically used for water bottles, but it also has two zippered pockets on top above those two. Long gears such as tripod and trekking poles can be slipped behind them and secured using the compression straps. (a very creative feature)

The back panel, waist strap, and shoulder straps are covered in thick paddings and mesh foams. Not only do they help to keep you comfortable, they also help to distribute the weight. Additionally, the built-in ventilation channels help promote airflow and keep your back dry.

Overall, the Kelty Redwing 50 is a versatile backpack with exceptional storage capabilities. If you’re after a high-quality multi-purpose pack with an innovative design, then look no further than this guy right here.

It is a classic pack for multi-day trips with all the necessary features: a large main compartment, a sleeping bag compartment, as well as external pockets and attachment points.

For a backpack that is under $ 100, the TETON Scout 3400 has some of the best compression straps I have ever used. This is often an underrated feature. Good compression straps make life on the trail easier by keeping everything tight and secure.

On the back, the TETON Scout 3400 has a padded panel with built-in channels that aid in ventilation. The wide shoulder straps and thick paddings relieve some of the stress and ensure maximum comfort for users.

It is made of water-resistant ripstop nylon as well as being equipped with its own sewn-in rain fly, which can be conveniently rolled up and tucked away.

The weight is the only drawback to this otherwise amazing backpack. Its internal frame is strong and sturdy, but heavy. At 4.5 lbs, the TETON Scout 3400 is not the best option for minimalist hikers.

Having said that, this backpack is still a very solid choice. Being fully adjustable in the torso, waist, chest, and shoulders, it is a suitable option for hikers of any age, any gender, and any abilities.

This front-loading backpack comes with a U-shaped zipper that goes down halfway. It allows you to access the main compartment directly. Although that is is the only compartment the pack has, it comes with many other organizational features that stand out.

There is an interior sleeve for a water bladder, which can be connected to the pack’s right shoulder strap via. a thin tube. It allows for quick and convenient hydration on the trail.

The left side of the backpack just has a regular mesh pocket but on the right side, there are two. You can carry a water bottle on the exterior pocket and other long objects on the interior pocket. This dual pocket design is quite unique to the REI Co-op 25.

    Cons

    ❌ heavy for its size

❌ non-padded hip belt and sternum strap

While the Mountaintop 40 is definitely spacious, it does seem a bit smaller than the other 40 L packs I have used. This is just a minor inconvenience and it likely won’t affect your experience with the bag.

So after taking all factors into considerations, we can see why the Mountaintop 40 is one of the best hiking backpacks under $ 100. It is a fantastic option that is worth looking into.

To me, what sets the Outdoor Master 45 apart from other best hiking backpacks under $ 100 is its well-roundedness. It does everything relatively well and doesn’t have any glaring weaknesses.

Its main compartment can be easily accessed through the top via. a drawstring opening, or through the large zipped panel at the front. It can open up like a duffle bag.

Even though it is under $ 100, the Mardingtop 50 has all the features of a high-end backpack. The pack has an adjustable suspension that allows it to fit a wide range of torso lengths. I bought this pack a few years ago and everyone in my family could use it.

I am especially impressed with the buckle straps. They are of high quality and durable. The stitching seams are still holding up fine even after 4 years of use.

Additionally, the Mardingtop 50 has one of the most spacious top pockets I have ever seen in a hiking backpack. It is the perfect spot to store items that are used often: water filter, snacks, camera, etc. The paddings are good and provide enough comfort, but not spectacular (I prefer thicker paddings).

In short, the Mardingtop 50 is one of the top choices for budget backpacks. It will definitely meet all of your needs and more. Sturdy, durable, user-friendly, and affordable. There’s nothing to complain about.

What to look for when choosing a backpack

When you buy a hiking backpack, no matter how cheap or expensive it is, it’s an investment.

A good backpack can lead to a smooth and wonderful outdoor experience. A wrong choice of backpack, however, can ruin the trip and leave a bad taste for a long time.

That is why it’s important that you consider all the relevant factors and not just the price tag. The following sections break down the main characteristics/ features you should look for when choosing a hiking backpack.

Looking for a travel backpack? Check out some of the best budget travel backpacks here.

    Material

Even though you are searching for a backpack that is under $ 100, you should make sure that the material it’s made of is not compromised. The pack should be sturdy, durable, and ideally, water-resistant (more on that below).

Generally, these are the 3 most common materials used for hiking backpacks :

Nylon is one of the most popular choices of material for good reasons. Nylon is strong, durable, scratch-proof, and thermally resistant.

Polyester is a plastic-based fabric. Being strong and sturdy yet lightweight, polyester is another popular alternative. In addition to that, it is quick-drying and chemically unreactive.

Cotton canvas: although cotton canvas backpacks tend to be a bit heavier than the other two, they have excellent durability. They often are designed to be fashionable and stylish, rather than being outdoor-focused.

Branded materials: some companies give their materials special names to stand out from their competitions. These materials often fall under one of the 3 material groups above.

    • Cordura – nylon
    • Rip-stop nylon – nylon/ polypropylene
    • Kodra nylon – nylon

    Price

Generally, it is true that more expensive packs are of higher quality. Although price is definitely an important factor, it is not the only factor. You want something that meets all of your needs, while still being affordable.

This means that you should probably look into some of the “unknown brands”. Products from popular & reputable outdoor brands such as Osprey or Gregory tend to be more expensive.

Having said that, there are plenty of packs that give more than what you pay for. With a bit of digging and some research, you will discover high-quality and cheap backpacks from not-so-popular brands. In general, larger packs will cost more. Lighter packs will also cost more.

    Comfort

Comfort is the one factor that absolutely cannot be overlooked. After all, if you can only wear a backpack for 2 hours before experiencing pain, then who cares if it has 15 different pockets.

Paddings are the main feature that affects how comfortable a backpack is. They help prevent the straps from digging into your body when the load gets heavy.

You usually want a backpack with wide straps and thick paddings. They will relieve some of the load off your shoulders and hips, which could mean the world when hiking long distances.

These features are non-existent or very poorly designed most of the time in budget backpacks. This means that you have to pay extra attention and take the time to test your pack before hitting the trail.

    Brand

Nowadays, there are so many brands to choose from. Some of the more reputable ones include REIArc’teryxOspreyGregory, The North Face, and Patagonia. Products from these brands tend to be on the more expensive side.

So when looking for a backpack that is under $100, we’ll have to go in a different direction.

While it’s true that you usually get what you paid for, unknown brands can still produce high-quality products. Look up and read the customer reviews, their return policy, as well as the product descriptions themselves to determine whether you can trust a brand.

    Size, capacity, and weight

The bigger your backpack, the more stuff you will bring. And that is not always a good thing. Those extra grams (or ounces) mean a lot when you’re on your 20th km of the day.

Also, keep in mind that bigger packs will weigh more.

Budget backpacks tend to be heavier than their expensive counterparts because lightweight materials cost more. If you are a beginner, just look for a comfortable pack. You can always upgrade your gears over time.

    best hiking backpacks under 100

Since the size of a backpack will depend on its purpose, take some time to think and ask yourself – why am I getting this backpack? Is it for trail running? day hiking? multi-day backpacking? even week-long trips? Or is it just for traveling in general?

Day trip (20-30 L): these are small and comfortable. They should be spacious enough to hold a water bottle and some other basic things. Just enough for the day.

Weekend (30-50 L): these are slightly larger. Large enough to carry camping gear, sleeping gear, and more food.

Multi-day/ long weekend (50-75 L): these are my go-to packs, whether it be for backcountry camping or traveling abroad. They are spacious, durable, but not too bulky. They usually have hip pockets, side pockets, a sleep bag compartment, a strapS for trekking poles, and many other useful features.

75+ L: these packs are the most durable and can carry tons of gears. They are perfect for longer trips or those in colder weather. You will need the space for extra clothes, warmer sleeping gears, more food, and a 4-season tent (they’re heavier). If you are a parent carrying gears for your kids, these are great for that too.

    Frame

The backpack’s frame is a feature that is often overlooked by many. There are 3 types of frames you will come across:

Frameless: these are the most lightweight and compact out of the three. A frameless backpack doesn’t have a definite structure. Just think of the backpack that you went to school with. You can sit on it, flatten it, roll it up with no problem. They are ideal for day hikes but do not offer much support or space.

Internal frame: the majority of backpacks fall under this category. Built with either a metal or plastic frame, they provide much better support and allow you to carry and heavier load. They come with hip and chest straps that help to distribute the weight and “hug” your body.

These packs are ideal for multi-day backpacking trips where you will need to carry along more gear and food. They are usually at least 40 L.

External frame: these guys are designed to carry even heavier loads, used for trips that required even more gear (think week-long trips). External frame backpacks are not as common and they are not recommended for those who are new to backpacking.

    Fit

Once you have decided on the type of backpack you’re looking for, the next thing to consider is the fit. This will depend on the length of your torso and the circumference of your hip

I cannot emphasize this enough, always try the backpack on and if you are purchasing it online, read their return policy beforehand.

Torso length: a lot of packs are available in many different sizes. Some are even adjustable.

Hip circumference/ waist size: the hip belt of most backpacks is designed to be adjustable.

    Ventilation

While sweating is unavoidable, a good ventilation system can promote airflow and help keep your back dry. Most backpacks with an internal frame will have a ventilation system integrated into their back panel.

Some designs will have a breathable mesh resting against your back. There is a small gap (a few inches) placed between you and the mainframe of the pack so that it is not rubbing directly onto you. This feature is especially useful when hiking in hot weather.

Other backpack designs will have ventilation channels attached to the back, but they basically do the same job.

    Pockets & attachment points

When evaluating pockets, you must consider the purpose of the backpack. For a day pack, you probably only need a few to carry a bottle, snacks, and a few other gears. If your is a multi-day trip pack, you will have to carry a lot more gears and pockets will help keep them organized.

Side pockets: these are often made of elastic materials. They can hold a water bottle, bear spray, sandals, tent poles, or other items of similar shape.

Front pocket: usually is rectangular and has a zipper. Some front pockets have smaller pockets within them for organization purposes but I’m not a fan of those. I like to keep a map, my rain poncho, and small items that I do not use often (car key, first aid kit) in here.

Top lid pocket: usually located at the top of the pack, this pocket is the perfect spot to store small items that are used more often. These can include medications, water purification tablets, gloves, sunglasses, and a flashlight.

Hip belt pocket: great for items that you would want to take out without putting down your backpack. GPS device, trail map, lip balm, sunscreen, and snacks/ candies/ chocolates all go in here.

Attachment points had become a lot popular on hiking backpacks in these past few years. Although they are not necessary, they can certainly make life easier.

Daisy chain: this is a set of multiple elastic cords stitched to the outside of the pack. You can attach tools, wet sandals, or anything that doesn’t fit inside the main compartments. You can also use carabiners to hang items from it

Trekking pole loops: are used to carry trekking poles

    Straps & paddings

These are the features that are often low quality in most hiking backpacks under $ 100 (even the best ones). When picking a pack, pay close attention to them because straps and paddings are very essential components.

Hip straps and chest straps help to secure the backpack to your body and distribute the weight. When hiking, you want your hip to carry most of the load, rather than your shoulders.

Since you’ll be wearing your backpack for a long period of time, it is crucial that it fits your body perfectly. Always look for packs with adjustable straps.

Hip straps of larger backpacks sometimes even come with little pockets, which are great additional features. You can keep small items that are used often such as the trail map, your phone, sunscreen, and camera.

    Pack access

Most backpacks (especially day packs) are top-loading. They have a large opening at the top where you can access the main compartment. I had one of these for a long time and I can tell you, it can be very annoying trying to fish out gears from the bottom of the pack.

This is why I prefer backpacks with side or front zippered panel access. They allow you to completely open the bag and access the interior without having to dig everything up.

Water resistance, waterproofness & rain cover

Most budget backpacks are not completely waterproof, however, they are water-resistant. They will survive a light drizzle of rain. And as long as you don’t submerge them underwater, they’ll do the job.

Having said that, you should invest in a rain cover for your backpack, if that is not included. It comes in handy on rainy days because water can eventually seep through the zippers and seams.

The rain cover is quite light and barely takes up any space. You could also turn a garbage bag into a DIY rain cover.

Finally, as an extra precaution, I like to prepare Ziploc bags (clear plastic bags) for things that absolutely cannot get wet: my wallet, my camera, and my phone.

    Other features

    – Hydration bladder

Hydration bladders are sold separately but I highly recommend getting them. They are designed to help you stay hydrated and eliminate the need for water breaks. The bladder will be placed inside a sleeve of your backpack. A plastic tube is connected to the bladder at one end, its other end is attached to your shoulder straps for easy drinking.

    – Sleeping bag compartment

The sleeping bag compartment is usually located near the bottom of the pack. It is designed for easy access to your sleeping bag and also acts as a stuff sack.

A sleeping bag compartment is a nice feature to have but not a deal-breaker by any means. Most internal-frame backpacks have one nowadays.

How to find a budget backpack that fits you

Now that you know what to look for in a hiking backpack, you may be wondering, so how do I find one that fits me? A backpack is only useful if it fits your body properly. This section focuses on multi-day packs only. This is because fitting a day pack is very simple and self-explanatory.

A lot of outdoor stores like REI offer free professional fitting. I recommend taking advantage of that service, at least for the first time. They will walk you through the steps and you’ll learn a lot for later trips.

Alternatively, you can do it the DIY way. To measure your fit from home, all you will need is a measuring tape. Having a friend can also make the process easier.

First, you may want to watch this video from REI. I think they did a good job of walking through each step of the process.

    Measure your torso length

    1. Top of torso: Tilt your head forward and locate your C7 vertebra. This is a bony bump located at the base of your neck.
    2. Bottom of torso: Slide your hands down the sides of your body and locate your hip bone with your thumbs. The spot between your two thumbs is the point you’re looking for
    3. Have a friend measure the distance from the top of your torso to the bottom

    Measure your hip width

Since your hip will be carrying most of the load, having a good fitting hip belt is very important.

    1. Locate your hip bone again with your thumbs
    2. Wrap the measuring tape around the top of your hip, this is the measurement you’re looking for.

    Testing your fit

Lots of hiking backpacks nowadays come with an adjustable suspension. This feature allows them to fit a wide range of torso lengths. Having said that, it is always a good idea to take a look at the size chart before purchasing.

    Women backpacks

Most of the backpacks on this list are unisex, which means that they are suitable for both men and women.

Women do tend to have narrower shoulders and a smaller frame compare to men, so a lot of brands have begun to make women-specific backpacks. If you are a woman and a hiking enthusiast, then you may be interested in those.
